Green Beauty Make-up Review: Primer, Foundation & Powder

I have always been a true girly girl. In fact, I was doing my own hair at just 5 years old! Looking back at old photographs now, maybe I shouldn't have been (imagine side pony's with a headband AND barrettes ๐Ÿ™ˆ).

Growing up, I couldn't wait to get into make-up. And I've loved beauty products ever since. So it's no surprise that my make-up has been the last area I transition as part of my cleaner lifestyle. On this one, I've been pretty resistant.

But I've recently been testing out a few green beauty make-up products and wanted to offer a more detailed review of them, in case you're in the same position as me. Maybe you don't know where to start or what products to choose. In any case, I hope that these reviews will help you out a little.

I'm all too aware of the negative impact that the toxic chemicals found in our beauty products can have on our health and hormones. If you're reading this and wondering HOW!? Well, simply put, everything we put onto our skin from moisturizers to shampoo gets absorbed from our skin directly into our bloodstream.

Given all of that, I knew that it was about time that I overhaulled my make-up products and replace them with cleaner, greener, non-toxic products.

It's interesting, because I made the leap almost immediately in transitioning all of my toiletries so I'm not sure why my make-up was any different for me. I suppose I was skeptical that I would find clean products that would stand up to my standards but I can honestly say that I've been pleasantly surprised.

For reference, I purchased all of these products online from The Detox Market. The online boutique is awesome. It's very user-friendly, easy to navigate, offers a wide variety of products and my order arrived super quickly. I would definitely order from them again.

First up, this face primer from Alima Pure. I love a good face primer especially if you need your make-up to last throughout the day. This particular one is supposed to even out your skin, reduce the appearance of pores, reduce inflammation, shine and increase the longevity of your makeup throughout the day.

PROS: I really like the texture and consistency of the product. It goes on smooth and feels really nice on my skin. It also helped my make up last longer without fading and/or creasing which is always a plus!

CONS: I was really hoping to see it create that matte finish it boasts about and minimize the appearance of my pores, but sadly, I didn't notice any of that.

WOULD I BUY IT AGAIN? I'm on the fence. I think I need to try out a few more different brands before fully making up my mind about this product.

Next, I purchased a foundation. I don't really wear a lot of foundation in terms of the amount that I use - it's actually quite minimal. I really don't like it to look like I have a lot of face make-up on so I use it sparingly. I'm super turned off by cake-y looking foundations.

PROS: I chose this one from Ilia because I have always heard great things about this brand and it got some good review from the detox market. I also really like the pump bottle for application purposes.

CONS: I definitely chose the wrong shade. I opted for Mojave when I probably should have selected Santorini. Mojave was super organge-y. That's an issue that can easily be resolved. But within a few weeks of using it the consistency of the foundation became watery and really difficult to apply. The pump also started to act up, it would shoot the foundation out - like literally. Foundation would go everywhere! I'm not sure if it's the formulation or a bad batch. I did try shaking it and cleaning the spout opening to see if that helped at allbut it didn't.

WOULD I BUY IT AGAIN? Most likely not. For me, the consistency of the foundation really turned me off especially at that price point. I would be hesitant to spend $57 on it again only to experience that same issue. I think I'll be exploring other options for now.

Lastly, I purchased this colour balancing face powder from Alima Pure. I really love translucent powders just to finish and set my foundation. Again - I don't like a lot of face make-up, so I find that for me, the translucent powders are perfect.

However, this product is meant to be worn UNDER your foundation and not OVER it - which is sadly, what I bought it for. MUST READ DESCRIPTIONS BETTER - ugh! Totally my own fault.

This product is meant to reduce redness and discolouration BEFORE you apply your foundation.

PROS: I can't really speak to this since I've honestly been wearing it over my foundation for the past few weeks and I haven't loved the effect. It's a bit too sheer and powdery - but again, it's meant to be applied under it.

CONS: I found it to be a bit drying on my skin.

WOULD I BUY IT AGAIN? Probably not but only because I was looking for a finishing powder to set my foundation and this is meant to go on underneath. I totally blew it on this one. If you require a really nice sheer powder to help even out your skin tone, this might be the product for you! Should have probably bought this one here. Oh well, next time!

So that's it for my first series of make-up reviews! Overall, I was truly pleasantly surprised by the efficacy of these products. Even though I'd still like to shop around a little bit to find the right products specifically for me, these did give me hope that clean/green products can still be just as effective.

Stay tuned for more reviews as I continue to overhaul my beauty kit and test out more products :)
