How To Make Your Own Body Butter

Like most of Ontario - I'm over Winter and ready to welcome back warmer days. I'm sure you have noticed that these frigid temperatures really dry out our skin - I have the solution!

No doubt you've heard me say this before, but let's quickly review. Our skin is our largest organ and it absorbs everything we put onto it. Our skin can absorb the potentially carcinogenic ingredients often found in commercial beauty and skin care products that increase our risk of having cancer at some point in our lives. Once absorbed into our blood stream, our body is forced to process whatever lotions and potions we've slathered onto ourselves. This makes it especially important to be buying quality skin and other beauty products that are void of toxic chemicals and known carcinogens.

Ingredients to look out for: phthalates, aluminum, coal tar dye, formaldehyde, phenols, sodium lauryl sulfate, talc, propylene glycol, mineral oil and synthetic fragrances. Did you know that seeing the word “fragrance” can replace a list of over 100 unknown chemicals?

My solution: DIY skin care products - as much as you possibly can! This way you control all of the ingredients. And often, the ingredients are so clean, you could literally and safely eat your beauty products. Now that's something!

Last point - the amazing part about DIY beauty products is that you can ensure that each ingredient packs a nutritive punch and offers you exactly what you're looking for.

Ok, back to our dried out skin. Here is a recipe I've created for a super hydrating, nourishing, clean body butter. It's luxurious, smooth and has a refreshing and uplifting citrus scent.

Your body will love you for this!

Body Butter

1 cup sweet almond oil (you could also use jojoba or wheat germ)

1/2 cup coconut oil

1/4 cup beeswax pastilles (I purchase mine here)

1 tsp vitamin E oil

2 tbsp mango butter (you could also use shea or cocoa butter here)

20 drops of doTERRA Citrus Bliss essential oil blend (or any essential oil of your choice - lavender and orange make a great combo!)

* Buy doTERRA oils here

  • Put all ingredients except the essential oil(s) into a mason jar.
  • Place mason jar in a pot of water over the stove top and add enough water to cover 3/4 of the jar.
  • Turn stove on low/med and stir occasionally until coconut oil, beeswax pastilles and mango butter have melted. This can take a little bit of time - be patient.
  • Once melted, use tongs or an oven mitt to remove jar from pot and leave it out on the countertop to cool.
  • Once it's cooled down, add in essential oil - stir and leave it out (covered) until it's completely cooled.

This recipe is super easy and really hydrating for your skin. Plus it smells so darn good!

Stay warm friends XO
